The Circle Thea, 20.4.2015

I wish to place before you as a Key perhaps the most important of all, the basis for all the rest; or we could say that contains all the rest: the Circle and its various divisions. Here I will discuss mainly one: the circle divided into four quarters. This is the basis of our new language (which the Mother expressed the need for when trying to explain to Satprem the simultaneity of Being and Becoming on 18.4.1961). but unless this is seen in the context of the 12-stage zodiac, the Circle is devoid of Knowledge: it just IS but it does not speak to us in a new way, a new language.

To give an example we have the third quarter, the Mental – but at the same time it is the Kshatriya, the third of the four castes. (Further, it is the location of the 6, the Cosmic Divine – but that is another story). This third quarter is where Death is located in the human progression. The question of evolution or the Becoming enters here. The progression through the same twelve, small or larger demarcations of Time, is always the same ‘language’. In other words, be it an individual or a cosmic dimension, the process is one.

To sum up, Death is located in the Mental Quarter. This indicates the current stage of human development progressing on to the next stage above Mind. I have written time and again that exclusivist religions of the Piscean Age made this ‘death’ a fixed and static point – the end of the road; beyond is a blank which could be filled with whatever nonsense was required to imprison the human consciousness. In the parlance of the New Way one can present this visually as the absence (to our conscious experience) of the fourth quarter. The visual aid is that the supramentalisation of the species is precisely the opening up before human evolution of that ‘missing’ quarter. That is Swar, the solar world. When Sri Aurobindo writes of bringing the Life Divine to Earth, of establishing it here, it is another way of saying ‘opening up the last quarter’.

This is why the Time Factor is so important. To integrate that quarter into one’s lived experience Time must be the ally (see the Gnostic Circle). When we are born we bring with us compact time, the compact Zero of the sacred triads. That Zero (our births) gives forth the One/1, and thereafter it is sequential time (the Becoming). But in the Supermind the experience is simultaneous: one comes rooted in compact Being and moves through, or is the instrument of that Being as it expresses Itself, or to experience Itself sequentially in the Becoming (of Itself). Therefore it is said that the purpose of material creation is that the Supreme knows himself – i.e. he uses the eye of consciousness in the individual (as lodged in one’s soul) to see himself in the Becoming (know himself in the experience of Becoming through extension). It is always that Being supporting the extension – therefore it has to be simultaneous, otherwise the material dimension would collapse into a void, become a black hole that simply does not SEE, where the light of consciousness is trapped).Material creation is therefore a vision that unfolds, no better way to express it.

The Circle tells you all this and much more because finally it is Number, when seen as the essence of the Circle, which then offers applicability via the calendar which is, again, nothing other than the circle divided into 12, the Mother’s symbol.

Seeing in Understanding

“May we not seek miracles – let us rather have realization.
This is the solid way. Let us not see visions or lights or etheric forms…
let us be light, let us see in understanding,
let us be the ‘new seeing’.”
Preamble, The New Way, 1, Thea,
Aeon Books, 1981

In a recent posting Thea says that to consciously participate in the Supramental manifestation, it is first necessary ‘to see in understanding’ ( As the Third in the Solar Line her task is to present a vision of how the Divine acts on Earth, how a gnostic society becomes established on this planet.

This KEY presents text from her autobiographical study, The Tenth Day of Victory (TTDV), to examine how Thea sees and the power derived from what she calls ‘The Act of Seeing’. All the keys we now use in a new way of being flow from her central Act of Seeing: the Gnostic Circle, the Map of the Manifestations and The Geometry of Time found in the original plan of The Mother’s Temple. As we study her methodology/her yogic sadhana, students of the new way can learn to align their own seeing with hers.

Recently a colleague sent news about a series of workshops given by a well known Indian author in the USA. The focus is on enlightenment of the participant through a series of spiritual exercises and meditation. This line of thinking and action has been around in New Age Circles for some time and it continues to attract people who are looking for short-term change without a deeper effort.

The goal of A New Way of Being for the earth is quite different. In the introductory quote above Thea makes the goal for the serious practitioner quite clear: let us not see visions or lights… let us rather have realisations. In 1985/86 when we first met her and set up Aeon Group, USA, these were the words she told us to use on our flyer; with this quote she was giving us the KEY. At the time we did not understand and our yoga over the years has been precisely this goal: to see in understanding.

It begins with the name THEA, a Greek word for Goddess. In a quotation from her journal of 31.8.75 Thea says: ‘’…the Mother has said it beautifully; indeed the key to the manifestation is Seeing – it is a power of seeing; a vision that unfolds and is contemplated by the Divine Consciousness…’’. The journal ends with these words:

This is the seer = one who sees = or Thea

She explains that this name given to her in an initiation with the Mother in Rome in 1970 held the key to her destiny, to the work that she was meant to accomplish as the Third in the Solar Line. The Mother as Cosmic Divine is one who sees, but the experience of seeing as the Third in the Solar Line (the Transcendent Divine, the Cosmic Divine, and the Individual Divine) is different: she sees from the plane of the physical, the Earth, the Individual Soul.

Thea says she prefers to use the verb form of the name, Act of Seeing, rather than the literal meaningGoddess or devi: “…This is the purpose of individual incarnation, this ability to see and hence to know and to live consciously the act of creation along with the Supreme.” (TTDV 2, p. 215 – 7)

To sing the harmonies of the universe came to Thea through the Mother in a very natural way. As she explains it: “…this transmission, if you will, was in the form of ‘seeds’ planted in my consciousness – usually felt as a descent from above, through the crown of my head. I would then give a body to that seeding. Gradually it became evident that the process was controlled and following a pre-determined plan. I could see this unfolding in harmony with the Gnostic Circle, one of the very last ‘gifts’ received from the Mother before her passing… I did not see them as having been ‘keys’ with which I could carry out the tasks allotted to me as a member of the line. But that is exactly what they were: keys of Gnosis by which I could carry forward the next stage of the work”. (Ibid, p. 278)

By 1976 Thea had been in the 5th year of her yogic sadhana at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. She writes there was so much to do, so much remained unfulfilled, but she felt she was prepared to carry the task forward – she had been granted the privilege of ‘seeing’ by a Divine grace that was preparing her for the work she was born to do. There was no personal satisfaction except the ‘’immense gratitude such acts of seeing always left in their wake. I was allowed to see…” (Ibid p. 297).

She was also aware by this time that one person’s seeing was not enough. There is a falsehood deep in the human being, she laments (Ibid, p.304), and her intention was “to give forth the keys of a higher knowledge by which perceptive, sincere disciples could discover for themselves the wisdom in the Mother’s choices and know how accurately the Supramental Manifestation had been arranged.”

Seeing in Understanding: Applications

The system which began to evolve from her ‘seeing’ was something new and Thea could no longer call it astrology. Although she used that ancient tool of higher knowledge, the zodiac, as the base in the circle of 12, a new language was emerging. In 1974 she published The Gnostic Circle with the subtitle, a synthesis in the harmonies of the Cosmos. The focus was entirely on the harmony of the spheres and her book became a “testimony to the new approach” being revealed in her yogic practices (Ibid p. 145). The entire “wheel of time” as she called it was central and each astrological sign was seen totally in relationship to the whole. In this new formulation, each sign, along with the nine planets, and number system of 0 though 9 became the alphabet in her new language of understanding (see The Gnostic Circle/key).

A few years later, Thea’s seeing in understanding provided the insights needed to decipher the core of the Mother’s Temple. This plan with its very precise measurements re-established a very ancient knowledge, which had been lost in time. Thea tells us that nothing in her seeing was based on arbitrary assumptions: “Nor was I ever satisfied with that one date or one piece of the mosaic and with that to formulate or fashion by deduction the whole design. This was a body of knowledge with its own science. Truthful assessment of certain conclusions could be made only on the basis of scrutiny of the entire corpus because bearing a foundation of unity, each piece joins with others to finally convey the complete design; each supports the other and removing one the entire structure might collapse. This was fully in keeping with Sri Aurobindo’s description of the properties of the Supermind. The Mother’s plan was the first non-speculative example of that truth-consciousness in its applicability for this Earth dimension, honouring the planet’s own Divine Measure, or her contribution to the cosmic harmonies.” (Ibid p 325)

The Laws of Equivalence and Correspondence

In the first volume of The New Way Thea writes about the new language of form; she gives detail about how she sees and the tools that assist her. She explains that the Laws of Equivalence and Correspondence are the foundation for a new kind of seeing and that this kind of knowledge is based on what is called ‘models of the universe’:

“… temples, pyramids and other structures which capture universal principles relative to Earth by means of the laws of correspondence: a microstructure, when built according to a knowledge of the laws of correspondence, can reveal the destiny of all that such a structure is able to synthesise; moreover these structures not only contain knowledge but power as well, for the harmony of the higher laws of correspondence endow a structure with the power to influence in the realm of that which the monument embodies. (see End Notes 1 – 2)

“The key to this is naturally to be found in an understanding of the laws of correspondence, and this is a field almost wholly ignored in the world today, – so predominantly ‘scientific’. Likewise the key to the understanding of the laws of correspondence lies in the experience of the oneness of creation, the lived realisation of the equality of the microcosm and macrocosm, because these are merely parts of just One Being. In a word, such an understanding can come only to one who lives in a consciousness of unity and who has reached such a consciousness through specific disciplines devised for this purpose.” (Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, The New Way, 1, Aeon Books, 1981, p. 60).

On 17 January, 2003, Thea and a group of like-minded people formed the Matrimandir Action Committee (MAC) so that, as stated in the Dedication: “…the Mother’s Vision of the inner chamber of her Temple would be recorded for posterity and would be recognised as the finest example of sacred architecture the world has known, comparable only to the Great Pyramid at Giza. This document will serve future generations in the discovery of ‘the symbol of the future realisation’, her own words to describe the Core of the chamber and its place in the Supramental Manifestation.” (

Chronicle 7 (Ibid) focuses attention on the laws of Equivalence and Correspondence to explain the ‘higher laws in the Mother’s Chamber’. Again she states that they are the foundation of the new Seeing, or as the Mother would say, ‘the new precision’. The law of ‘one day equals one year’ is one such law and familiar to many people, as it is used in the western system of astrology to progress a horoscope. This law, she explains, is entirely Vedic; but when the Divine Maya was lost, so was this formula.

Thea has written extensively about these very precise measurements given by the Mother for the core of her Inner Chamber. Although these were ignored by the people who built the structure now standing in Auroville, the Mother’s sacred plan became for Thea ‘a philosopher’s stone’ – a guide for the renewal of these ancient truths (see End Note 3).

The Mother stated that the 12 columns of the room were the 12 months of the year. And by the Law of Correspondence, the 24 metre floor plan is the 24 hours of the day which is equivalent to 365 days of the year: “…the earth lives the experience of the Sun on a proportionately reduced scale when she makes one complete spin around the pole of her own being or her inner sun. For our planet this experience is lived in a time span of 24 hours, and therefore the contribution of the Earth in the chamber (in the floor measurement) is 24 metres…by the Laws of Correspondence these are equivalent to the 24 hours of the Earth’s inner solar experience.” (The New Way 2, pp. 204 – 5).

Thea divided 365 (the year) by 24 (hours) and found this to be 15.20, – the exact measurement (in metres) given by the Mother for the Shaft of Light that extends from the ceiling of the room and descends through the translucent Globe down to the top of the Pedestal, (Ibid).

These laws are part of the new language evolving to help the student of the New Way see along with the Divine. Thea writes that the core of the Mother’s chamber revealed itself to her, and because of her ability to see in terms of interrelationships, to see in unity, she was able to give us the exact meaning and measurements of each part of the Mother’s vision. (Chronicles of the Inner Chamber, p. 43)

In the second volume of her autobiographical study, The Tenth Day of Victory, (Part 11), Thea shows the depth of her seeing in understanding when she describes the use of the ancient geometrical design, the Vesica Pisces, to discover Sri Aurobindo’s rebirth as the Son. She calls this the Transcendent’s Birth as the Immanent and tells us that for those who have eyes to see and a desire to know, all of this is written in the core of the Mother’s Chamber.

[1] “… Just the fact that the urn had been given a measurement was sufficient for me to take it as sacrosanct. The reason is that imprinting occurs when an item is brought down from a higher, subtle plane and rooted in the Earth; this is consolidated through Measure. But only a sage of a very high order has the capacity to carry out this measuring act and resultant imprinting. This capacity is referred to in Chapter 21 of The Revelation. In verse 15 it is stated: 15. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

The ‘golden reed’ refers to this unique ability to establish the higher things in material creation based on the gnostic measure – that is, the measure of truth and knowledge. (TTDV2, p 84)

[2] “Nowhere in the Entretiens does the Mother state that the building of the Temple is for the experience of human unity… She gave birth to a soul, a gnostic temple, with such power in its dimensions and arrangements that its building could become a power of transformation upon the Earth…

The meaning for the Earth’s evolution in the Matrimandir is that in its heart one does not come upon a Void, one comes to the Sun, the divine light in the heart of matter… all this is subtle and has nothing to do with human unity . It is the essence of the Matrimandir according to the Mother’s vision and plan, as a gnostic temple which is to reflect Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s work and which is to be a generator of transforming energies upon Earth…(ibid,pp.101-103)

[3] Thea describes her method of discovery and says there is nothing complicated in these ancient laws. She quotes from Charles Malamoud, in the Unesco Courier, May 1993:

“…Such correspondences exist, but it is up to humans to discover them, to become aware of them, to formulate them – and in so doing, to confirm them. Solving the Vedic riddles … involves linking similar elements from the different levels of existence… A ritual object, a particular moment in a ceremony, is thought to have a replica or counterpart in some specific spatial or temporal element of the universe…

“This network of correspondences is not static. The Vedic authors… gave much thought to finding new, more refined and complex equivalences. Several Sanskrit words convey this idea, words that mean ‘connection’, ‘link’, even ‘kinship’. In Vedic India, the idea of correspondences is more important than the concept of causality – whereas Buddhism insists on sequence of cause and effect…” (Chronicles of the Inner Chamber, Chronicle 7, 5 May 2003, p. 43)

CERN – Temple to the OLD CONSTANT

‘…Up until now, the philosophy of reductionism, which tells us how things work by breaking them up into parts has served us well. However the present crisis in particle physics can perhaps be expressed by the simple statement that reductionism and the search for grand unification seem no longer to be working.’ Lee Smolin, The Life of the Cosmos, Oxford University Press, 1997

In his opus work, The Life Divine, India’s greatest sage, Sri Aurobindo, wrote that the world had reached a point which he characterized as an ‘evolutionary crisis’. It is a crisis driven by man’s limited mental capacity and understanding and the burden of his past beliefs. And because it is an evolutionary crisis there is the implication of an unrelenting force and compounding pressure behind it seeking some form of resolution by pushing the mental consciousness and species into a more acute state of tension whereby it might exceed itself in a new more inclusive vision of reality. Before this happens however, the Mental world we have created with its bi-polar oppositions, irreconcilable beliefs and intractable positions will be pushed to the brink of destruction. And nowhere will these evolutionary tensions be so great as in our deeply entrenched beliefs about Spirituality and Science because neither of these traditions are open to the concept of evolution, let alone the reality.

Inextricably linked with the Evolution, which is a self-evident fact for most people, is the Involution without which there would be no evolving in time. This is a terrifying notion for our 21st century Science which is wedded to the idea that there is no meaning, purpose, or preexisting plan to what presents to our senses as the Physical universe, but Sri Aurobindo tells us otherwise,

“…From the beginning the whole development [of the universe] is predetermined in its self-knowledge and at every moment in its self-working – it is and moves to what it must be by its own original Truth, and will be at the end that which was contained and intended [Involved] in its seed.”

Sri Aurobindo goes on to explain:

‘…We speak of the evolution of Life in Matter, the evolution of Mind in Matter; but evolution is a word which merely states the phenomenon without explaining it. For there seems to be no reason why Life should evolve out of material elements or Mind out of living form, unless we accept the Vedantic solution that Life is already involved in Matter and Mind in Life because in essence Matter is a form of veiled Life, Life a form of veiled Consciousness. And then there seems to be little objection to a further step in the series and the admission that mental consciousness may itself be only a form and a veil of higher states which are beyond Mind. In that case, the unconquerable impulse of man towards God, Light, Bliss, Freedom, Immortality presents itself in its right place in the chain as simply the imperative impulse by which Nature is seeking to evolve beyond Mind, and appears to be as natural, true and just as the impulse towards Life which she has planted in certain forms of Matter or the impulse towards Mind which she has planted in certain forms of Life.’ Sri Aurobindo – The Life Divine —The Human Aspiration, pp. 4-5

According to Sri Aurobindo, what is an ultimate and last derivation in the involution is the first to appear in the evolution. What was original and primal in the involution is, in the evolution, the last and supreme emergence; a mind of Unity and Knowledge that knows all things as itself and in itself and therefore knows them intimately, completely, in their reality as well as their appearance. This emergent faculty is the Vedic Truth-Consciousness or what Sri Aurobindo has termed the Supermind. It is characterized by Precision, Clarity and a more integral Vision of the whole which Sees each thing in its proper place. As Thea has written, ‘…It embraces the past but only because it reveals at the same time that which lies far beyond it.’ It is for this reason that the ACC website with its Supramental perspective is utterly unique in its ability to facilitate a discourse that leads beyond Science and Spirituality.

The purpose of this posting to the ACC Forum is to apply this higher perspective to the condition of modern Scientific Cosmology and its dogmatic adherence to a philosophy of fragmentation and reductionism which attempts to tell us how the world works by breaking up the constituents of matter into smaller and smaller pieces. Central to this discussion is the Standard Model of Physics and its implementation at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider which is Science’s $13 billion dollar Temple to the OLD CONSTANT.

The Large Hadron Collider

Just outside Geneva, in an underground facility between France and Switzerland, CERN – the ‘Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire’ built a 17 mile circular tunnel to house the most complex and expensive machine ever built. It is the world’s most powerful particle accelerator known as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In a maze of tunnels, some as much as 30 stories underground, the world’s leading physicists have created a machine which they hope will reconstruct the conditions that may have existed at the ‘Planck Scale’, a billionth of a second after the Big Bang. They do this by smashing beams of protons together inside the LHC at close to the speed of light and examining the debris. Their hope is that by analyzing these high speed experiments on ‘fundamental particles’ they will be able to peer deeper into the building blocks of nature. To achieve these incredible speeds the LHC uses some 10,000 super-cooled, superconducting electromagnets and superconducting cables that must be maintained at ultra low temperatures of -271°C.

The LHC went live in September 10th, 2008 and almost immediately, within 9 days, on September 19th it experienced a major accident caused by a faulty electrical connection between two of the accelerator’s magnets. In an instant an electrical arc was created that punctured the liquid helium enclosure leading to the release of the gas into the insulation vacuum of the cryostat. When the pressures were released into the tunnel they were unable to contain the rise in force. Pressure valves failed to vent the gas and a shock wave ran through the tunnel. The forces brought to bear on the vacuum barriers attached to the quadrupole magnets, each 5–7 metres long, which focus the beams, were so strong that the cryostats housing these magnets actually broke their anchors in the concrete floor of the tunnel. A 400 meter section of the collider was completely wrecked taking one year and $60 million to repair. In March, 2013, after three and a half years of operations, the LHC was shut down again, this time for two years to give scientists, engineers and technicians the opportunity to upgrade the machine. It is scheduled for a Super Restart on March 25th, 2015 with an increase of the collision energy of over twice the force of previous levels. The collision energy at restart will be 13 Trillion Electron Volts (TeV). Following a revision of their Gravity Model, CERN scientists plan to conduct new experiments at these higher levels in the hope that a completely new universe will be revealed, rewriting not only the physics books but the philosophy books as well.

The Standard Model

Since the 1930s physicists have developed a well tested body of theoretical knowledge about the fundamental structure of matter that has come to be known as the Standard Model of Physics. It describes what matter is made of and how the basic building blocks of matter interact with the four fundamental forces at work in the universe. Scientists have been able to reduce and classify these forces in categories according to the strength of the force that they carry and the subatomic particles with which they interact.

The basic grains of matter are called fermions and the force carriers are known as bosons. Fermions come in two families; leptons and quarks each containing six members. The twelve Fermions are the building blocks of matter. These particles interact with each other through fundamental forces and each force comes with one or more force carriers. There are complex mathematic equations expressing these interrelationships in a way that allows theorists to make very precise predictions. Nearly every quantity that has been measured in particle physics laboratories over the past five decades falls right on the predicted value except one: the now infamous Higgs Boson. It is the missing link in the Standard model that ostensibly explains how other particles get their mass.

The Old Constants are Dangerously Incomplete

While the Standard Model accurately describes the visible phenomena within its domain, it is still incomplete. Research based on gravitational studies which the Standard Model does not include tells us that all of the visible matter around us including ourselves, the stars and planets only amounts to about 4% of the material volume of the universe. The remaining 96% of the universe is composed of Dark Matter and Dark Energy which the Standard Model does not acknowledge and cannot explain. Another, more serious problem, described by physicists is that that the Standard Model lacks robustness at higher levels of energy. In experiments conducted at low energy levels particles behave as expected, but with scientists and technicians at CERN more than doubling the power and collision energy of the LHC to levels of energy that existed only trillionths of a second after the so called Big Bang, all bets are off. This is where the Old Constants and the equations of the Standard Model begin to break down including Einstein’s theory that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. At these levels of collision energy it is impossible to predict what will happen. It will all depend on the unknown physics at the Planck Scale, which at this point remain unknowable.

All assurances to the contrary, it is becoming increasingly evident, even to the non-scientist, that the Standard Model of Physics no longer works, nor does the belief that empirical observation of the known is the only sure course to discover the mysteries of the universe. With recent discoveries of so-called ‘dark matter’ and ‘dark energy’ it appears that no less that 96% of the universe is completely unknown to us and more importantly, un-measurable. A reductive empirical observation of the behavior of Matter is simply no longer an option. If scientist can only guess at what is going on based on the 4% of the universe that they can measure, this is clearly insufficient to provide any credible picture of the universe, let alone a grand unified field theory. As a result of their failures, particularly in finding the Higgs Boson, scientists are slowly beginning to understand what the ancient sages had known for millennia; that the physical and measurable reality accounts for only a minute portion of the Whole.

‘The material universe is only the facade of an immense building which has other structures behind it, and it is only if one knows the whole that one can have some knowledge of the truth of the material universe. There are vital, mental and spiritual ranges behind which give the material its significance…I myself see certain fundamental truths underlying all the domains and the one Reality everywhere. But there is also a great difference in the instruments used and the ways of research followed by the seekers in these different ways (the physical, the occult and the spiritual) and for the intellect at least the bridge between them has still to be built. One can point out analogies, but be maintained very well that Science cannot be used for yielding or buttressing results of spiritual knowledge.’ 11 Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga, p. 212

Courting Disaster

Clearly the truth physicists seek through the Old Constants at CERN cannot be found in sub-atomic particles no matter how long or hard they search. But their naïve willingness to tamper at the threshold of the awesome forces that created the universe exposes us all to incredible danger. The question to consider is this: What kind of careless risks are arrogant scientists willing to take to try and justify this patently untenable position? Since it is moving in a direction counter to what a supramental knowledge would consider prudent, the odds of an unexpected accident grow stronger every day. Grave warnings over the Super Restart at the LHC have been given by a number of scientists including the eminent physicist, Stephen Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson, American astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium. And if that doesn’t give us cause for concern, there is the enigmatic passage from the seer Nostradamus that appears tailor-made for the possibility of an accident at CERN.

“Leave, leave, go forth out of Geneva, all Saturn of gold shall be changed into iron, the contrary of the positive ray shall exterminate all, before it happens, the heavens shall show signs.”  Nostradamus – Centuries, Quatrain 9: 44 [1]

The Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, bears a certain similarity to the legendary power source of Atlantis known as the ‘terrible crystal’ or the Tuaoi Stone. It was a huge 6 sided cylindrical crystal which was said to be able to capture solar, lunar, atmospheric and telluric energies and focus them in such a way that produced tremendous power. According to the renowned psychic Edgar Cayce, the crystal amplified the powers of the Sun itself to create a Ray that could generate energy from the disintegration of the atom. As the arrogant priests of the Great Crystal became greedy for more power, said Cayce, the energies of the Firestone were tuned to higher and more destructive frequencies until in their carelessness they finally destroyed their entire civilization. The story of Atlantis has special meaning for our modern world in the sense that we too are vulnerable to an arrogant science that has become disconnected from the true nature of the universe.

The Speed of Gnosis

The only thing that can reverse this dangerous threat is a willing embrace of a sweeping change beyond the old Mental consciousness and species into a new Supramental Gnosis where the truths of the creation may actually be found. Thea explains:

“Einstein was the prime example of Mind in control. Mind dictating the course of evolution – making it in Man/Mind’s image. This is the tragedy. Therefore, he had to forego the cosmological constant that would have been his finest hour. It is all so very clear when one has the New Way as touchstone. We have to view what is happening in our very times as supremely important. Just like the chemists and their Cold Fusion breakthrough, the Italian scientist who measured the speed of the neutrino and declared that perhaps the speed of light could no longer hold as the determining constant of physics, so too is he being denigrated by his co-scientists. HE HAS BEEN FORCED TO RESIGN. [2] They claim they will re-test at some future date, but you can be certain that those results will not be matched again – the same story as Cold Fusion. They have put the lid on the issue because it means the end of science as we know it.

The speed of light as constant confined us, imprisoned us in this material universe. With it, based on that constant we could never know Oneness. Astronomers continue to probe EXTERNALLY seeking for the first moment ‘out there’, in the far and farther beyond; and only then will they have the secret to the origin of our universe. Light is MATERIAL. It is not of the essence of consciousness. Only through consciousness can we come to that Zero compaction ‘on the other side’. Only then can we experience Oneness and ’see along with the Supreme’. For this is the goal: to consciously ’see along with the Supreme’. To consciously be its instruments for the delight of Being – and this delight can only come through Becoming, never otherwise. And only Supermind can reach these heights – never Mind. We have exceeded Mind. There is no doubt about it; otherwise I could never have formulated what I did this morning. The FORMULATION is the breakthrough, the moment of integration when the threads come together in the experience of Oneness.

The world stands on the threshold of this great breakthrough – but the old Constant blocks the way. No other scientist will dare seek the truth of the neutrino because they have made an example of the one who did dare: forced to resign. Mon Dieu, our world is sick indeed. Never like now do we need a new Constant.” Thea – Private Correspondence

From the ancient Greek Hubris (ὕβρις) means extreme pride or willful self-confidence. When it offended the gods of ancient Greece, it was usually punished severly. Nemesis appears as the avenger of crime and the punisher of hubris. She was also called “Adrasteia”, meaning “one from whom there is no escape”; her epithet Erinys (the implacable) is specially applied to Demeter, the Mother Goddess. Researchers at CERN should take note of the wisdom of the Greeks and the fact that that they are pursuing a willful and dangerous course that obstructs the progress of the evolution as well as the demands of the Time Spirit. It is not likely to end well.

[1] In the language of Cosmology, the planet Saturn, because of its function of precision and measure, has long been associated with Science. ‘All Saturn of Gold’ could thus be understood as the wealth or positive effects of science. In alchemy ‘Iron’ is representative of the planet Mars, which is often associated with war and destruction. ‘Shall be changed into Iron’ suggests that the golden age of science will be changed to an age of destruction. (It should not be overlooked that one of CERN’s symbols is Nataraja, the dancing Shiva, Hindu God of Destruction) That Nostradamus even speaks of Geneva and the ‘Ray’ in the same quatrain is truly remarkable in light of CERN and the LHC. The ‘contrary of the positive ray’ can only be understood as a negative ray; radiation, electro-magnetic effects, strangelets, mini black holes or something as yet unknown from other dimensions. ‘The heavens shall show signs’ is an oft repeated phrase that can be found in the Bible and the broader body of world prophesy. It is a nod to the law of correspondences, As Above, So Below’ and the Manifestations that decree the exact timing of great periods of evolutionary change.

[2] In September of 2011, Prof. Dr. Antonio Ereditato – University of Bern, High Energy Physics and director of the Opera project at CERN announced the possibility of Superluminal travel (beyond the speed of light) by Neutrinos which are subatomic particles that appear to have no mass. The experiment timed neutrinos produced at CERN, Europe’s premiere particle-physics laboratory near Geneva in Switzerland, as they arrived 730 kilometres away at OPERA’s underground detector at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. High-precision atomic clocks stationed at each end of the beam were synchronized using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The team reported in September 2011 that neutrinos arrived at Gran Sasso 60 nanoseconds faster than a light beam would do. To fully appreciate the outcry that followed, we must understand that the phenomenon of Fundamentalism is not unique to religion. There is a scientific fundamentalism, dogmatism and rigid adherence to tradition perhaps even worse than religion because of the long standing academic tradition behind it. As Peter Plichta wrote in his marvelous book, God’s Secret Formula, ‘…In this world nothing can, or can be allowed, to be wrong which for hundreds of years has been blessed by scientific approval’. In Dr. Ereditato’s case it was his challenge to Albert Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity which holds that NOTHING can travel faster that the speed of Light. The furor that followed upon Dr. Ereditato’s discoveries might be compared to a scientific inquisition suddenly thrust upon someone found guilty of the greatest heresy. Excuses were made, faulty instruments, miscalculations, and Dr. Ereditato offered himself up with a very dignified resignation as director of the Opera project. As yet, the matter has not been revisited. But to quote Peter Plichta’s book once again in a passage that recalls the words spoken to him by the famous Physicist E.O. Fischer. ‘…One day, perhaps it will take 30 or 40 years – someone will come, someone with an individual mind, and then modern physics will collapse like a house of cards…I am a physicist, I have been awarded the Nobel Prize and I know that modern physics is wrong.’

The Gnostic Circle

“The Gnostic Circle is the most effective method for understanding the transformation of human consciousness. It represents a vision of wholeness and has only one objective: it deals with the soul or seed of the divine in each created thing and reveals the process by which that seed is made to flower in its process of becoming.” – Thea

Thea first introduced this key or tool of Supramental Gnosis in her 1975 book, The Gnostic Circle – A Synthesis in the Harmonies of the Cosmos. This key offers the means by which an individual can center him or herself in Time, within the circumstances of both Individual and Collective evolution, and thereby develop an Integral and Supramental vision of the whole. The Gnostic Circle presents the unity-vision of the Vedic Rishis in which the division of the Earth’s 360° year into 12 months and our 0/9 number system/enneagram are seen to function simultaneously rather than as separate systems of measure and knowledge. With this simple vision of the oneness of the zodiac and enneagram, the Gnostic Circle invites viewers to consider how they can begin to outgrow the fragmented consciousness that is the foundation of our current civilisation. The image of the Gnostic Circle presents the supramental or solar consciousness by which all divisions of the circle and all divisions proper to the process of the creation of life, are eternally One.

Using this key, students can begin to restore in themselves and in the world, the eternal gnosis and unity consciousness that underlies many of the world’s ancient sacred texts. It functions in terms of the all-pervasive unity of creation and hence in terms of the self-similarity, self-symmetry and quantum entanglement of micro and macro cycles of time of which the Vedic Rishi were well aware. Thus the 24 hour day, the 360 degree year, the 25,920 year Precession of the Equinoxes and larger cycles of time, can be known and seen as ordered fields of the soul (individual and collective).

In The Synthesis of Yoga, Sri Aurobindo wrote:

‘Time is the remaining aid needed for the effectivity of the process. Time presents itself to human effort as an enemy or a friend, as a resistance, a medium or an instrument. But always it is really the instrument of the soul.’ (The Synthesis of Yoga, CWSA, Vol. 23-24, p. 68)‘The timeless Infinite holds in itself, in its eternal truth of being, beyond this manifestation, all that it manifests in Time. Its time consciousness too is itself infinite and maintains in itself at once in a vision of totalities and of particularities, of mobile succession or moment sight and of total stabilising vision or abiding whole sight what appears to us as the past of things, their present and their future.’ (Ibid, p. 885)

It is here [in the transition from mind to supermind] that a change begins to take place in the time-consciousness and time-knowledge which finds its base and complete reality and significance only on the supramental levels. (Ibid, p. 904)

The Gnostic Circle shows students the truth of Sri Aurobindo’s vision in that they can apply it as an aid or key which helps to shift consciousness (however gradually) from mental towards the supramental. Those who apply this key to their own lives and to world affairs begin to directly experience the supramental consciousness-force that coordinates the whole of our activity, ushering us towards the higher levels of manifestation and self-expression.

In very simple terms, the Gnostic Circle helps the user see and understand the evolutionary march or journey that we all share, regardless of however ignorant we are of this journey. As one learns to see the perfect order and harmony displayed in the smallest details of one’s existence, one begins to identify less with the ego and the mind, and more with the Supramental consciousness which has begun to emerge in our new day and age, just as the Mental consciousness once emerged from the Animal or Vital consciousness in our distant past.

How to Apply this Key of Gnosis

The application of this key for an individual is quite simple. The beginning or zero point of an individual’s life is birth, and from that zero point we journey in time and space. The Gnostic Circle can be used to map out and see the geometries and harmonies that emerge in 1 year cycles, 9 year cycles, 36 year cycles and 72 year cycles or, if one wishes to study larger collective evolutionary movements on our planet, the framework will be larger, such as 2,160 year astrological ages, the 25,920 year Precessional cycle and even vaster cycles of time. Usage of the Gnostic Circle is not limited to the birth of individuals. It can be used to understand the birth or emergence of anything … a country, a pivotal event, a discovery, a new endeavor, etc.

The birth date of the object of one’s study is placed at the zero point at the top of the circle and then, depending on what cycle of time one chooses to explore, we begin to map out pivotal dates according to the major divisions of the circle, identifying the dates associated with the cardinal points, the trinity, and the 12 months.

If looking at the Gnostic Circle in terms of the one year cycle, the outer circle (blue ring) is divided into 360° or segments and each degree represents a day. The last five days of the year are considered ‘out of the calendar’. The Zodiac or division of the year by 12 is seen in the midsection of the circle and each 30° segment is a month. The orange ring contains 36 segments of 10° each and these are decanates of the 12 signs of the zodiac. In the one year journey/cycle, each day we progress 1° of the circle (which in turn is a microcosm of the whole year as well as larger cycles of time, and of ALL TIME). Each 10 days we progress 10° or a decanate of one astrological sign. Each 30 days we progress one month or one astrological sign. Each 40 days we progress 1/9th of the year (corresponding to the 9 integers of the circle), each 90 days we progress a quarter of the year (i.e. a ’season’), and each 120 days we progress a third of the year.

It proves useful to map out and note the major geometries of one’s year, i.e. the dates associated with the cardinal points, the triangular points, the 12 months and the 9 integers. Using this map of one’s year, one can begin to see interesting patterns that arise concerning important events and people in one’s life which point towards a Supramental organisation of life rather than a senseless, random and chaotic creation.

The 9 year cycle tracks enneads of time. When applying this time frame to the Gnostic Circle, each degree is 9 days, each decanate is 90 days, each ‘month’ or sign is 9 months, each season or quarter of the circle is 2.25 years, and each corner of the triangle is 3 years.

In the 36 year cycle, each ennead is one season or quarter of the circle and corresponds sequentially to the phases of evolution on Earth: Physical, Vital(Animal), Mental, and Spiritual. In this cycle, each 12 years marks out the central triangle.

In order to fully understand how to navigate, apply and understand this key of Supramental Gnosis, it is necessary to read The Gnostic Circle and The Magical Carousel. These books are essential reading for those wishing to truly grasp the importance of time and its real measures by which we exist, grow and evolve. They will help students of Gnosis to realise that not only are we simultaneously Matter and Spirit, but that we are also Time as well as Timeless. For too long have we forgotten Time as an extension of our own being. The Vedic Rishis sung of the yoga or yajna by which one comes back to this realisation and hence to the portals of the unity consciousness which eludes our current mental-egoic consciousness, and the body and path of this yoga/yajna was the 360°, 12 month year. The Gnostic Circle if used correctly will reveal the eternal wisdom of the Rishis to be indeed eternal. This can be directly validated in one’s own experience and life laboratory. As individuals orient and centre themselves within their own personal Time on Earth and within ALL Time, they begin to shift from the mental towards the supramental consciousness and from the egoic to the universal self. One begins to shift from faith in a higher order and power of creation, to the direct experience of that higher order and power of creation.

Quotes regarding the Gnostic Circle

‘The Gnostic Circle is merely the combination of the zodiac – the occult circle which contains the knowledge of evolution – and the structural pattern of the solar system. The Circle of 12 is the zodiac, and the Circle of 9 is our actual solar system, each orbit representing one year of Earth life. The joint harmony of these two, superimposed or synthesised in one circle, is what constitutes our key to the evolution and flowering of the seed of the Spirit. In fact we can say that the Gnostic Circle is mainly for this purpose: it shows mankind the ultimate and ideal perfection that can be attained during this particular phase of the evolution, during this great transition point from animal-mental to the more divine mankind.’

– Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet,
The Gnostic Circle, p. 159, 1975

‘The Gnostic Circle allows us to measure the progression of any event in time. And it provides the means of assessing an event’s relevance to time and place within a global and universal context. Above all, it permits us to appreciate the interconnectedness of events through a unified, spherical approach to Time. The Gnostic Circle is a yardstick which can be applied to any event and by which that event or object may be made to reveal its intrinsic nature and objective value. In ancient literature and tradition, such a tool was sometimes referred to as the Golden Rod, or the Philosopher’s Stone. Its value resided in the fact that because of its special relation to Time and Space, it could provide an objective means to assess the truth-conscious substance of any given situation or event or object. In a word, it could objectively reveal the element’s inner pulse and place within the greater harmony of life on Earth and within the solar system.’

– Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet

‘… it is our purpose here to speak of some of the essential reasons why the knowledge has been contained and transmitted in the zodiac and the structure of the solar system … Moreover, it is our intention to give as clear a picture as possible of the true purpose of astrology, and in which way it can be an asset in the development of the spirit….’

‘Cosmic harmonies give us the understanding of the movement of progression within the eternal. The art in its totality is transmitted so that man may have a clear vision of the process of evolution, and above all, of its ultimate goal for any particular Age…’.

‘… in order to understand this play, we must first realise that the ultimate aim of creation is to be an ever more direct manifestation of the upholding and underlying spirit.

‘The zodiac gives us a picture of this outer movement of evolution which has as its support the inherent spirit. It represents the aspect of the unique Energy in a state of movement, as opposed to the aspect of the unique Energy in a state of rest. The purest example of the former is Matter, and the purest example of the latter is Spirit. These two poles represent two aspects, apparently contradictory and opposite, of the One Unique Energy, working itself out into its fullest manifestation.’

The Supramental Manifestation

This is the third stage of the transformative process Sri Aurobindo set on its way in 1872, when he took birth on Earth as the 9th Avatar of Vishnu. Its first two stages were carried out as a joint mission by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, his co-worker in the Yoga. Ostensibly the focus during those early first two stages was to lay the foundations for what came to be known as the Integral Yoga. The newness this added to the vast array of yogic disciplines in India was precisely its integral character. But this was in service of a higher purpose.

As I have pointed out many times, almost the entire focus during those decades was to reverse the direction of the quest assumed by all yogas approximately after the time of the Buddha. It was a joint mission to turn the tide – a tide virtually with the power of a tsunami – in that all the great realisers over the past 2000 years, barring very few, had opted for an escape out of the material dimension so as not to face the challenges posed by a creation in matter which appeared insurmountable given the totality of circumstances at that stage of the evolution of the species. To bring about this shift the collaboration of the Mother was essential; without it his mission could not have succeeded. And in order to succeed in the reversal, the planes of consciousness contained in the physical had to be brought into the process: the spiritual, the mental, the vital, down to the physical. Thus was born the Integral Yoga. It was the first stage of the reversal that would change life on Earth forever. The physical vessel had to be poised to receive the more potent forces in their descent, a physical that had been abandoned to its unavoidable destiny of disintegration, closed to the luminosity of the higher regions.

ma1After Sri Aurobindo’s passing in 1950, the Mother continued the process he was also engaged in, but on the subtle plane; and finally, six years after his passing, the long-awaited breakthrough occurred. It set the transformative process on to its third stage. But for the Mother on this material plane there was still much to do. Mainly, it was an overlapping period to prepare the field for the Third to enter. This overlapping, if it may be so called, lasted for 21 years; without it there would not have been a successful completion of the first two stages, nor the adequate field readied within which the Third was to take up the baton, as it were, of the critical third stage – corresponding to the vital in the four planes of consciousness; up to that point only the first two planes had been brought into the ambit of the transformation. Throughout the years the Mother remained physically incarnate after Sri Aurobindo’s withdrawal, the focus of her yoga was to create conditions for the transition to the Supramental Yoga from the Integral. Everything she did from 1950 onwards had this objective. The crucial turning-point came when the breakthrough finally arrived.

It was on 29 February 1956, 59 years ago, that the yogic breakthrough took place releasing the descent of a power that would ultimately bring about an entirely new principle operating within the evolutionary process. After it occurred the Mother made this statement:

‘This evening the Divine Presence, concrete and material, was there present amongst you. I had a form of living gold, bigger than the universe, and I was facing a huge and massive golden door which separated the world from the Divine. As I looked at the door, I knew and willed, in a single movement of consciousness, that “the time has come”, and lifting with both hands a mighty golden hammer I struck one blow, one single blow on the door and the door was shattered to pieces. Then the supramental Light and Force and Consciousness rushed down upon earth in an uninterrupted flow.’

This was the beginning. Significantly it was a 3-Power year, because much of what was to manifest thereafter was an intertwining of action between all the parts of the Solar Line, converging on the Third, opening the way to the 0 and the integrating power of the Fourth, the One. From then on evolution of the human species has been undergoing critical changes in the realm of consciousness; above all, these have had an accumulative effect, with the speed of change experiencing acceleration, like the tightening of a spiral. The technological developments in communication are responsible in large part for this accelerated progress; in itself this reveals a key feature of the new manifestation that can be more easily understood by visualising the methodology as circular; progress therefore is made by convergence. In the course of this message, I will explain the system in depth because it is a distinguishing feature between the Integral and the Supramental Yogas.

The task of the Third in the Line is to facilitate a vision of the Divine in action on Earth. The result is ‘seeing in understanding’ whereby all creation is her Being.

The capacity to observe the play of circumstances differently is one of the Third’s key additions. It requires an ability to perceive always the parts within the whole as a harmonious display, as order and no longer chaos. Succinctly this means a consciousness poised centrally, as if in the centre of the circle whose periphery would be that play. One thus becomes the Sun, or reproduces in perceptive awareness the astrological symbol of the luminary of our System ☉. In this circular methodology the issue of convergence introduces quite a new operation, never before experienced on Earth; it is unique to the Supramental Shakti as the prime mover of the evolution of consciousness. The principle characteristic of convergence, as opposed to linear processes, is that transformation is contingent on a simultaneous progress that as a harmonised action among the parts and the whole can then be integrated or drawn into the net, as it were, attached to the Centre of the new supramental cosmos.

From this central position we observe the harmonious relation between the parts of the periphery. This integrated perception of harmonised parts within the whole is attracted to the Centre that HOLDS – that is, this centralised play is the key to order. The harmony we perceive and measure in our solar system is because of the Sun’s ‘holding power’, if it may be so called. In the language of contemporary science it would be the gravitational pull of the Sun that keeps the family of planets in defined orbits or specific boundaries. The nine planets must display this Order because they extend into the system the harmony that is the essence of our Sun. It cannot be otherwise. The ancient text on sacred architecture, the Mayamata, describes the same principle of perception, revealing in the process the role the Hindu Temple has played across the ages: If the measurement of the temple is in every way perfect, there will be perfection in the universe as well. (XXII.92)

The temple in this verse is equivalent to the eye of perception of the transformed human being. Based on that centering of consciousness, order is perceived throughout the universe. This is not to be confused with the centering acquired within one’s consciousness-being as attained in the practice of the Integral Yoga, involving the transformation of the four major parts of the being within one’s individual cosmos. Centering in that scenario does not extend beyond. The Mayamata, on the other hand, points to a poise that extends beyond the confines of the individual consciousness: the entire universe is drawn into that central point by contraction – or the same ability ‘to hold’ as the Sun possesses by its gravitational pull. In the Sun’s case no exertion of will is involved: it is simply a state of being; the individual aspires to that same condition of Being – not an exertion of will, just Being, or Sat of the trinity Sat-Chit-Ananda.

But contraction as a cosmic direction acting on the material dimension is not alone. Its origin is in the subtle plane and carries the properties of the Unmanifest across the borderline where it meets the expanding field of space. The joining of the two directions lies at the heart of the universal manifestation as we know it on this side of the border. Without the harmonisation of the two, there could be no material manifestation. The balance between contraction/vertical and expansion/horizontal is the great secret of a creation in matter.

This is the same message in Leonardo’s famed drawing of the Man in a Circle and Square. The process he describes graphically is the same attributed to the Hindu Temple: remaining pinned to the Square the aspirant is boxed in, quite literally, within the limits the sex-centred individual experiences in life. Everything is self-serving, contaminated by vested interests of various sorts and degrees of severity. The reason for this cramped, cut-off condition is the imbalance as in the off-centred cross ✝. Contraction is not balanced by expansion. This unbalanced condition describes the state of the human consciousness in the recently-concluded Age of Pisces. Indeed, the most iconic symbol that had imprinted itself on the collective consciousness during that Age was the off-centred cross, the meaning of which is that the final stage of the Supramental Descent symbolised in the birth of the victorious – not crucified – Son had not occurred. Put another way, the Piscean Age was one in which shadows had to be dissolved – as in the ‘shadow’ of the 9thAvatar of Vishnu, and also the shadow-Son. These were the two ‘redemptions’ Sri Aurobindo had to attend to by his birth as the 9th Avatar, combined with his return as the 10th in an unbroken line of time. These shadows required his direct intervention.

In a word, the Man in the Square is poised around the ego – the off-centred axis – and regardless of the hours spent in meditation or psychotherapy, there is no escape from that constricted box: awareness is always conditioned by an axis stemming from the sex-centre and therefore bound to the atavistic purpose of evolving humanity. In such a poise perceptive capacity can never reach the extended boundaries figured in Man within the Circle – that is, incorporating the entire universe. In the words of the Mayamata, the Circle Man is integrated into the cosmic manifestation which then becomes perfection. It is perfection precisely when that extended integration occurs. This is the heart and soul of the Supramental Yoga. What is truly awe-inspiring is that individual incarnation, birth on this third planet of the System, offers the potential of expanding one’s consciousness to encompass the entire universe. The issue is therefore just how far can this take us. Can this new poise cover all planes of consciousness-being, down to the physical?

All of these elements are essential parts of the Supramental Manifestation. They have been elaborated one by one in the Keys of Knowledge presented in our website – the only site where the contours of the Supramental Yoga are presented to an aspiring humanity eager to collaborate in the great change the new Power of Gnosis has introduced.

In the new dispensation we cannot remain satisfied with the poise of the ‘crucified’ man in Leonardo’s divinely-inspired drawing. We want more now; we need more if the things promised by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are to manifest on Earth. The Integral Yoga they established in their Ashram in Pondicherry, India, can no longer suffice as a channel for the manifestation of the promised Life Divine. We must move ahead to the Circle Man and integrate the entire universe by means of a consciousness-being so poised that we can ‘become the Sun’, or become the new temple for the new age by realising the poise described by the Mother as ‘the symbol of the future realisation’. In that image we see the vertical solar ray (that casts no shadows), the luminous globe, the supporting pedestal; all of which are upheld by the Mother’s horizontal symbol. The entire gnostic content of the Supramental Manifestation is contained in these conjoined elements. They give rise to the main key of the new cosmology, the Geometry of Time. This new revelation encourages that process of realignment to ‘become the Sun’ because all these parts are drawn into the centred consciousness and they then make sense, as in ´seeing in understanding’.

Only when the four members of the Solar Line are perceived to form one whole, each member covering one of the four planes of consciousness that constitute the reality of existence on Earth – Transcendent (Sri Aurobindo), Cosmic (the Mother), Individual/Soul (Thea), and the Fourth as the integrating power of the Supermind in the physical – can the first phase of the Manifestation be considered successfully completed. Likewise, in the fourfold Solar Line we understand the most important ingredient for a conscious participationin the Supramental Manifestation. It is the simultaneous perception of parts within the whole as a harmonised reality of life. Put another way, it is the combined vertical (Solar Line) and horizontal (the field provided by the collectivity) as the lived experience on Earth that the Supermind made possible.

In the subtle plane, which the Mother called the creative plane of the physical, the transformed Earth already exists. Our task is to be the instruments for that higher reality to become established on Earth as an indelible feature of the evolution – that is, to imprint it through extended Time, the first step in the transformation of the physical since Time is the congealing constituent of Matter.
